Nassau Bound Description
The Bahamian Fishing Smack is a true classic, a signature and almost a logo of the Bahama out islands. Many of these 35 to 40 foot sailboats dock in Nassau from where they sail to the adjacent out islands in search of lobster, grouper and all types of scaled fish.
Unable to carry ice, the Smack itself has a huge live well up forward where marine animals as large as turtles and big grouper are held alive until they return to Nassau where the catch is cleaned and sold.
My contact with these Smacks usually involved pulling over to them at anchor and trading cold beer for live lobsters. Their crews were always congenial and the contents of their wells fascinating.
