Michael Hoffman

Raised in New York City, Cavendish Vermont and Key Biscayne Florida, Michael Hoffman was taught to paint from an early age by his uncle, the eminent portrait artist Irwin D. Hoffman.  The enduring theme of his uncle’s lessons were to learn your craft, know your subject thoroughly and develop a passion for it, for only then can you do it artistic justice.

At age seventeen, Michael moved to Florida with his family where he began his career as a professional fisherman right out of high school.  His love of painting remained strong however and in 1979 he decided to combine his two passions, fishing and painting and become a fulltime wildlife artist.  He was immediately accepted at the prestigious Crossroads of Sport Gallery in New York City where his work was well received and in demand.

Drawing on his many experiences and travels, Mike has spent the last thirty years at the easel painting landscapes, seascapes, classic sport fishing scenes and of course his first love, marine wildlife. When not in the field sketching or on a fishing trip, Michael can be found in his Florida studio on Hutchinson Island.

A three time Billfish Foundation Artist of the Year and prolific magazine illustrator, his works hang in some of the most prestigious sporting and art collections in the world.  Michael’s list of patrons includes many celebrities, from a former President, head of NFL and NBA coaches to Hollywood actors.

Despite his impressive list of well-known patrons, Michael derives his greatest pleasure when charterboatmen, professional anglers and hunting guides commission and admire his work.
